K-indices of 5 or greater indicate storm-level geomagnetic activity around earth.

K-Index Definition
The K-index is a code that is related to the maximum fluctuations of horizontal components observed on a magnetometer relative to a quiet day, during a three-hour interval. The conversion table from maximum fluctuation (nT) to K-index, varies from observatory to observatory in such a way that the historical rate of occurrence of certain levels of K are about the same at all observatories. In practice this means that observatories at higher geomagnetic latitude require higher levels of fluctuation for a given K-index

When the interplanetary magnetic field turns south compared to Earth's magnetic field (the arrow pointing below zero) geomagnetic activity will increase. The lower the arrow, the more that geomagnetic activity.
Green for low, yellow for moderate, and red for high solar wind speed.

A function of the solar wind's speed and density.

Solar history

The graphics represent solar cycles 21-23. The red line is the monthly smoothed sunspot number while the blue line is the actual monthly sunspot number. Cycle 21 started in June 1976 with a smoothed sunspot number of 12.2. Cycle 22 started in September 1986 at 12.3. Cycle 23 started in May 1996 with the monthly SSN at 8.0 and peaked in April 2000 at 120.8. The last smoothed monthly sunspot number is for March 2007 at 10.8.

The current solar minimum will likely be in August-November 2007 with cycle 24 peaking in 2011 or 2012
